Connectivity. It’s become quite the buzzword these days — and a selling point for various entities that provide devices and plans to keep us communicating. And, yet, the better and faster our Internet and data connections, the weaker our links to each other have become. That’s what this musical is about.
We believe that we must choose to unplug from any distractions that would steal our time and our energy away from our families, friends, and God. While the storyline of the script shows three generations having their own versions of disconnect, the songs are scriptural, reminding the singer and the listener what God’s Word says on this subject.
- The opening song, “Together,” includes John 15:5, a quote from Jesus about the importance of being connected to Him — “I am the vine, you are the branches.”
- Based on Psalm 118:24 (“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it”), “Stop and Look Around,” also includes the scripture as part of the text, a scripture that calls us to be present in the moment.
- To help us focus on what is really important in life, “Lay It Down,” is based on Hebrews 12:1, “Let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
- We included the great hymn, “This Is My Father’s World,” as a reminder that God made this magnificent world for us to enjoy, but we must look up to appreciate His handiwork.
As we were writing this musical, we both became convicted that we had let electronic devices distract us from communicating with each other and allowed them to take away from out “quiet time” with God. We have made a covenant — as we have encouraged you to do — to lay down every encumbrance that would weigh us down. We pledged to each other that we will connect on a greater level than ever before. And we promised God that we will stay focused on Him. We pray that you and your family will do the same.
